The 1500 Series of Cub Cadet riding lawn mowers and garden tractors were the smallest models the company had to offer in the mid-2000s. In this series are several models that use the same transmission belt. Although some models were offered with a manual transmission, the belt in question is used only on models with the hydrostatic transmission. Models that use this belt are the LT1018, LT1022 and the LT1024. Although the 1500 series is still in the production, these particular models are no longer available new.
Replacement belts may be numbered as 954-0640. The belt used to transfer power from the engine to the trans-axle at the rear of the tractor is a V-groove belt. This means that a cross-section of the belt is in the shape of a “V.” The width of the top of the belt is ½ inch. The total length of the belt is 79 inches.
According to Cud Cadet, several components must be removed with special tools to change the belt. For this reason the company recommends taking your machine to a dealer to have the transmission belt replaced. If you attempt this job yourself, obtain a shop manual for your particular model. The manual should contain an exploded parts view of the drive system parts, including how the belt is attached to the underside of the machine and how it is routed through the drive and idler pulleys.
Since Cub Cadet 1500 Series riding mowers and lawn tractors were manufactured by MTD, transmission belts from Troy-Bilt, White and Yardman machines -- all produced by MTD -- may be used if a Cub Cadet replacement belt is not available. The part number on these belts is 954-0640.
