How to Put a Craftsman V-Twin Kohler Belt On

Some Craftsman lawn tractor models use a V-Twin Kohler engine to power the mower and cutting attachment. The Kohler engine’s belt drive system loops around several pulleys from the front to the rear of the mower. You should inspect your belt before every operation. If the belt becomes severely worn, damaged or is loose, a replacement is needed. Instead of calling a professional repairman, you can loop the belt back on yourself.

Instructions

  1. Remove Mower Attachment

    • 1

Put the clutch in “disengaged” setting and set the mower attachment to the lowest setting.

    • 2

Disconnect the belt off of the belt keeper and engine pulley.

    • 3

Locate the idler arm and remove the clutch spring. You may need to use the needle-nose pliers to remove the springs.

    • 4

Disconnect the front link and remove the retainer spring and washer.

    • 5

Disconnect the mower suspension arm and rear lift link from the rear mower bracket. Remove the springs and retainer washers.

    Install Belt

    • 6

Remove the old belt starting from the stationary idler and working towards the back of the tractor.

    • 7

Start looping the new belt over the steering plate and above the clutch brake pedal shaft.

    • 8

Pull the belt towards the front of the tractor and roll it onto the engine pulley.

    • 9

Loop the belt towards the back of the tractor and onto the input pulley through the belt keeper.

    • 10

Install the belt through the centerspan idler, stationary idler and clutching idler.

    • 11

Check the belt to ensure it is tight along the pulley grooves and inside all belt guides and keepers.
