How to Tighten a Belt on a John Deere TRS 21

The John Deere TRS 21 snow blower features a drive belt that must be properly tightened in order to ensure efficient machine operation. A loose John Deere TRS 21 belt can result in complete engine failure, even in the middle of using the snow blower to clear your lawn and walkways. You can access the belt and tighten it regardless of your knowledge of more complicated snow blower repairs.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Breaker bar or ratchet

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the John Deere TRS 21 snow blower is turned off.

    • 2

Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the bottom plate under the snow blower's motor. This will provide access to the drive belt, which is wrapped around a pulley under the plate.

    • 3

Find the wheel-shaped spring-loaded idler. Use a socket wrench to loosen the bolt on the top of the spring-loaded idler wheel in order to make belt adjustments.

    • 4

Insert a breaker bar or ratchet into the open, square hole on the snow blower's idler plate. Turn the bar clockwise in order to tighten the belt. Continue to tighten the belt until your feel resistance. Immediately stop tightening and remove the bar or ratchet once resistance is felt.

    • 5

Turn the top bolt on the idler plate clockwise with your socket wrench until it is tight again.

    • 6

Fit the bottom plate back over the base of the John Deere TRS 21's motor and reinsert its screws using your Phillips screwdriver.
