The Handlebar for My Toro Push Mower Is Broken

Toro manufactures items ranging from small lawn appliances designed for home use to professional construction equipment. As of 2011, Toro produces two lines of push lawn mowers -- those for home use and those for professional use. A broken handlebar on a Toro push mower is a problem that can range in severity from cosmetic to debilitating. Luckily for Toro mower owners, the company makes it relatively easy to buy replacement parts for its products.
  1. Toro Push More Handlebars

    • Toro push mower handlebars all assume the same basic U shape you find on any walk-behind lawnmower handle. Toro mowers have several practical elements of the mower incorporated into the handle for ease of use. While these handlebars make the process of using a Toro mower easier, they also make handlebar breaks a potentially major problem. If a mower handle contains only functional elements, you can still use the mower with a broken handlebar. However, if the handlebar contains integrated functional elements, and the break damages these parts, your mower might not work at all.

    Mounted vs. Integrated Elements

    • Toro push mower handlebars contain both integrated and mounted functional elements. For instance, a mower might connect to a mulch bag for collecting grass clippings and the pull string to start the mower. These elements constitute mounted elements because they work independently of the handlebar, but are mounted to the handle. Integrated elements constitute those functional elements of the handlebar that make up part of the bar's structure, such as a bar that accelerates or brakes the mower engine, or a variable speed control knob.

    The Severity of a Break

    • The severity of the problems caused by a broken handlebar depends on what breaks and how it breaks. If the basic U-shaped handlebar breaks, your mower should work just fine other than the handle. Any mounted elements connected to a broken handlebar should still work as normal as well. In such cases, you only need to replace the handlebar. If a handlebar with integrated functional elements breaks, you should check each of those elements to determine whether they are working after the break. These elements usually connect to other parts of the mower, such as the engine, through wires or bars. A break in any of these connections means damage to an operating system of your mower, and requires replacement of the handlebar and the damaged part.

    Replacement Handlebars

    • Toro sells replacement parts for all of its current and recent equipment through its online shop. You can buy entire handlebars through this site, or individual parts of handlebars by entering your mower model number and clicking on the “handle assembly” link. The handlebar assembly purchase link lists all of the parts of your mower handle, making it easy for you to select replacements for all broken parts of your Toro push mower handle. If the break in your handlebar affects an electrical system within your mower, get an expert to install the replacement part and fix the mower. With an old Toro mower, you might need to look elsewhere, such as a used parts vendor.
