My Toro Wheel Horse 267 H Transmission or Belt Is Slipping

The Toro Wheel Horse 267 H is a riding lawn mower that relies on the proper operation of its pulley and drive belt to avoid potential issues when transmission "slipping." Transmission slipping occurs when gears on your riding mower either don't seem to activate when you use the clutch or "lurch" in and out.
  1. Reasons Behind Slipping

    • The Toro Wheel Horse's transmission can be affected by the operation of the pulley on the mower deck. A damaged pulley that requires replacement can often cause the perceived slipping phenomenon on your lawn mower. Additionally, the mower deck's drive belt can slip and require adjustment over time because of loosening and wear and tear. An improperly adjusted drive belt can cause issues when you try to engage the mower's blades.

    Safety Precautions

    • The Toro Wheel Horse should always be parked with its engine off before trying to troubleshoot the problem. Ensure that the mower deck has been lowered by pushing down on the deck lift lever on the right side of the mower, just beside the driver's seat. Take an additional safety precaution before beginning by opening the front engine hood. Find the spark plug on the right side of the motor. Pull the ignition wire out of the back of the spark plug.

    Belt Adjustment

    • Use a Phillips screwdriver to take out the screws on the Wheel Horse's belt guard. The belt guard is situated against the drive belt on the bottom center of the Toro's mower deck. Remove the belt guard to access the circular, spring-loaded idler plate just below the drive belt. Insert a bracket bar into the square hole on the front of the plate. Turn the bar clockwise to tighten the belt. Continue tightening the belt until you first feel resistance against your turning. Immediately stop tightening once this resistance is felt, otherwise you risk breaking the belt from over-tightening.

    Pulley Replacement

    • Ensure the Wheel Horse's belt guard is out of the way. Use your Phillips screwdriver to loosen the nuts along the front face of the spring-loaded idler plate. Remove the retainer pins on each side of the mower deck with a pair of pliers, then pull the Toro's deck out from the right side of the machine. Remove the pulley's top nut with your socket wrench, then pull the pulley off the mower deck. Position the new pulley into place where the old formerly resided. Tighten the nut into the top of the new pulley and follow your disassembly procedure in reverse to reinstall the mower deck to the Toro Wheel Horse mower.
