Warm up the tractor by running the engine and then turn off the John Deere tractor and set the parking brake. Warming the engine will help loosen the current filter and reduce any pressure but note that this also leaves the tractor components warm to the touch. Wear protective gloves and gear to help prevent burns or other injuries.
Set an empty drain pan under the hydraulic filter, which is located on the left side of tractor and looks like a large cylinder. Wipe the area clean to avoid contaminating the new hydraulic oil with dirt or residue.
Rotate the filter counterclockwise to remove and allow the oil from the filter to drain into the pan.
Apply a thin layer of transmission oil to the new filter seal and fill the filter up to one-half full with hydraulic oil.
Quickly attach the new filter to the hydraulic filter head until the filter comes in contact with the mounting and then tighten one more one-half turn by hand.
