How to Remove the Air Shroud on the Kohler CV15 Engine

Kohler's Command engine series includes the Kohler CV15. Once every 100 hours of operation, the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual requires you to remove the engine's air shroud -- the blower shroud -- and clean the area it encompasses. Removing the air shroud is a straightforward project, accomplished with two sockets and a ratchet with an extension

Things You'll Need

  • 1/4-inch socket
  • 5/16-inch socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 6-inch ratchet extension
  • Thread locker

Instructions

  1. Removal

    • 1

Remove the two 1/4-inch muffler mounting bolts, using a 1/4-inch socket, 3/8-inch ratchet and 6-inch extension. Lift the muffler away from its mounting bracket.

    • 2

Locate the carburetor on the bottom, front of the engine. Remove the bolt adjacent to and below the carburetor, using a 5/16-inch socket and a 3/8-inch ratchet with a 6-inch extension.

    • 3

Remove the two 5/16-inch bolts adjacent to the muffler, on the rear of the shroud.

    • 4

Remove the 5/16-inch bolt on the center, side of the shroud. Lift the shroud outward and away from the engine.

    Replacement

    • 5

Spread a line of thread locker onto the threads of the 5/16-inch shroud mounting bolts.

    • 6

Set the shroud in place over the fan. Hand-thread the 5/16-inch bolt through the holes in the center, side of the shroud and into the bore on the side of the engine. If the bolt is difficult to turn, the threads of the bolt failed to engage the threads of the bore properly. Remove the bolt and re-thread it until finger-tight.

    • 7

Thread the 5/16-inch bolt through the hole in the bottom, front of the shroud until finger-tight. Thread the two 5/16-inch bolts through the holes in the rear of the shroud until finger-tight.

    • 8

Securely tighten all of the shroud mounting bolts with a socket and ratchet.

    • 9

Spread a line of thread locker on the threads of the 1/4-inch muffler mounting bolts. Install the muffler on the muffler bracket and thread the two mounting bolts into place until they are finger-tight. Securely tighten the bolts with the ratchet and socket.
