Allow the engine to cool, if necessary.
Examine the front side of the engine and locate the spark plug wire boot. Disconnect the plug wire boot from the spark plug for safety. Never disconnect the plug wire by tugging on the wire itself; always grab the boot to aid the disconnection process
Examine the upper right side of the engine. Locate the air cleaner, located above the fuel tank and carburetor. The air cleaner housing features a single flat-head screw with an irregular rectangular-shaped steel body.
Remove the single screw securing the air cleaner to the carburetor using a flat-head screwdriver.
Lift the air cleaner assembly from the carburetor. Separate the two halves of the air cleaner to expose the foam element and plastic cup, using your hands.
Remove the plastic cup and old foam element from the lower half of the air cleaner body.
Clean any dirt or debris present within both halves of the air cleaner body.
Mate the replacement filter to the lower half of the air cleaner, with the lipped side of filter facing up and extending over the upper portion of the air cleaner. Replace the plastic cup and upper half of the air cleaner.
Fit the air cleaner assembly to the engine's carburetor. Secure the air cleaner assembly to the carburetor using the original screw and flat-head screwdriver.
Reconnect the spark plug wire to the spark plug by pressing the boot onto the wire until you feel it click onto the plug.
