How to Change the Drive Belt on MTD Tractor Model 13AI699H088

The exposed mower deck belt on your MTD lawn tractor Model 13AI699H088, is subjected to abrasion from grit thrown up during normal mowing, therefore it must be inspected regularly. However, although the engine drive belt is tucked away on top of the mower deck, it is also subjected to wear after extended use. If the blades begin to hesitate and you hear a squealing noise coming from under the driver’s seat, it may be time to replace the drive belt.

Things You'll Need

  • Thin sheet of plastic
  • Hooked spring puller
  • Set of wrenches

Instructions

  1. Deck Removal

    • 1

Drive the tractor onto a firm level surface. Depress the clutch pedal, set the parking brake, turn off the engine and remove the ignition key.

    • 2

Pull the rubber boot off the top of the spark plug and secure the plug lead away from the plug.

    • 3

Unscrew the fuel tank cap. Place a thin sheet of plastic over the neck of the fuel tank and screw the cap back on; this will prevent gasoline leakage while working on the tractor.

    • 4

Locate the spring attached to the transaxle inside the right rear wheel. Hook the end of a spring puller onto the transaxle end of the spring, stretch the spring slightly and remove it from the lug welded to the transaxle.

    • 5

Place the lift lever in the "Blades Stop" position.

    • 6

Remove the two belt keeper pins located on the lower frame on both sides of the deck transmission pulley by unscrewing them with an open ended wrench.

    • 7

Push the lift lever all the way forward to the "Engaged" position.

    • 8

Roll the deck belt off the larger diameter upper section of the double grooved deck transmission pulley. NOTE: The lower smaller diameter pulley groove connects the drive belt from the deck transmission pulley to the engine pulley.

    • 9

Remove the hairpin clips and washers from the stabilizer rods attached to the square deck stabilizer plate located on the front of the deck, and disconnect the rods.

    • 10

Disconnect the six deck links by removing the hairpin clips and washers from the ends of the link rods and withdrawing the rods.

    • 11

Set the lift lever in the "Blades Stop" position and slide the deck from underneath the tractor.

    Drive Belt Replacement

    • 12

Lift the back of the tractor with a hydraulic jack fitted under the mid-point of the chassis. Lower the tractor onto axle stands and block the front wheels.

    • 13

Unscrew the parking brake knob. Undo the machine screws securing the transmission panel covering the engine pulley with a nut driver, and remove the panel.

    • 14

Raise the operator's seat. Disconnect the battery leads by loosening the clamps with a wrench and remove the battery.

    • 15

Disconnect the drive belt idler pulley spring attached to a bracket welded to the left side of the frame with a spring puller. The idler pulley is located on the front right of the deck transmission pulley.

    • 16

Remove the worn transmission belt from both the lower groove in the double grooved deck transmission pulley and the engine pulley.

    • 17

Position the new drive belt inside both pulley grooves. Hook the idler pulley spring back onto the deck bracket. Rotate the pulleys by pulling on the belt to ensure that the belt is seated properly inside the grooves.

    • 18

Replace the transmission panel and secure it with the machine screws removed earlier. Screw the parking brake knob back into the transmission.

    • 19

Replace the battery and lower the operator’s seat.

    • 20

Lift the back of the tractor with the hydraulic jack, remove the axle stands and lower the machine back onto the ground.

    • 21

Slide the deck back under the tractor and reattach it by reversing the procedures outlined in the "Deck Removal" section.
