How to Change a Muffler on a Kenmore Riding Lawnmower

If you're looking to change a muffler on a Kenmore riding lawnmower, in all likelihood your lawnmower is actually a Craftsman. The Kenmore brand is one Sears uses for appliances; Craftsman is Sears' brand for lawn equipment and tools. Now that that's straightened out, it's time to get to work. Muffler replacement is a fairly simple process. These instructions for the Craftsman LT 2000 lawn tractor -- based largely on guidance from a Sears ManageMyLife expert -- should prove helpful.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench

Instructions

    • 1

Park the lawnmower on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.

    • 2

Turn the engine off and disconnect the spark plug.

    • 3

Lift the hood of your lawnmower using the black latch on the right side.

    • 4

Disconnect the lights from their wiring harness by pulling out the black plug.

    • 5

Locate the two bolts that secure the hood to the body of the lawnmower. Remove them using your socket wrench and set them aside.

    • 6

      Remove the hood.

    • 7

Check to see if your lawnmower has a heat shield. If so, detach the shield by removing the two bolts that secure it.

    • 8

Locate the muffler -- a square or rectangular, silver box with an exhaust pipe leading out of it -- between the engine and the exhaust.

    • 9

Remove the two bolts that hold the exhaust pipe in place using the socket wrench.

    • 10

Wiggle the muffler and pull it out of the lawnmower.

    • 11

Check the gasket around the exhaust port to see if it needs to be cleaned. If so, scrape it using a wire brush.

    • 12

Install the new muffler and secure it with the bolts.

    • 13

Replace the exhaust pipe and bolt it into place.

    • 14

Replace the heat shield, if necessary.

    • 15

Reattach the hood and reconnect the lights.

    • 16

      Reconnect the spark plug.
