How to Replace the Fuel Bowl in a Craftsman Mower

The fuel bowl is part of the carburetor on a Craftsman mower. If the fuel bowl or fuel bowl gasket is damaged or worn out, it could affect the performance of your mower's engine. Gas flows into the carburetor fuel bowl to be mixed with air. The fuel and air mixture then passes into the engine cylinder, where the spark plug ignites it for combustion. A damaged fuel bowl may not allow the gas and air to mix properly. Fuel bowls can also corrode over time, leaving contaminants and particles inside the carburetor that could damage the engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Carburetor and choke cleaner
  • New fuel bowl and gasket

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the mower until it runs out of gas. Turn it off and disconnect the rubber spark plug boot from the spark plug. The spark plug is located at the front of the engine.

    • 2

Remove the air filter cover by unscrewing the cover screw with a flathead screwdriver. The air filter is located on the right side of the engine as you're standing behind the mower. Take out the air filter element, exposing the air filter base. Remove the air filter base assembly by loosening the 3 bolts holding it in place with the socket wrench. Removing the air filter base gives you access to the carburetor.

    • 3

Use the needle nose pliers to pull the air intake hose off the carburetor air inlet port. The carburetor assembly can remain attached to the engine as you remove the fuel bowl.

    • 4

Locate the bolt underneath the fuel bowl that holds it to the carburetor. Loosen the bolt with the socket wrench. Remove the bolt, gasket, and fuel bowl. Be careful not to spill any small amounts of leftover fuel onto the ground.

    • 5

Spray the carburetor float with carburetor and choke cleaner. Install the new fuel bowl, gasket, and bolt onto the carburetor. Reconnect the air intake hose to the carburetor.

    • 6

Reinstall the air filter base and tighten the 3 bolts to hold it in place. Place the air filter back onto the base and reattach the air filter cover. Reconnect the spark plug. Fill the gas tank with fuel and turn on the mower to check for any leaks around the carburetor.
