Sears 16 HP Tractor Parts

Sears has been tending to lawns and yards since 1934. Having acquired the Craftsman trademark for $500, the retailer expanded its line of power equipment with its first lawn mowers. Introducing rotary mowers in 1948, Sears sold 599,000 by 1955. Craftsman lawn tractors progressed over the ensuing years, increasing in horsepower and versatility. The mid-1980s saw the introduction of the 16 horsepower yard tractor, or the YT 16. This twin five-speed tractor has a 44-inch mower deck and, although out of production, is still in use by many customers.
  1. Electrical System

    • Not every component of the electrical system for this tractor model are still available directly from Sears. However, the key, nut and switch of the ignition system are still in stock. Washers still can be purchased in varying numbers. The tractor's wet cell battery, named so for its liquid electrolyte, can be replaced by the manufacturer, as can the battery terminal covers and hold-down clamps. The solenoid valve, an important element of the tractor's starter, is available for purchase, or an acceptable substitute part can be recommended. For parts that are out of stock, online tractor forums are a first recourse for many owners, as are classified advertisements.

    Chassis and Enclosures

    • Although the chassis assembly itself is no longer for sale by the manufacturer, many of the auxiliary parts are still procurable from Sears. The driver seat and the pan in which it sits are in stock, as is the fender. While no longer carrying the fuel tank for the original assembly, Sears does sell a similar design that is fully compatible with the YT 16. Other substitute components include the attachments drawbar, the foot rest and fender bracket.

    Drive Assembly

    • The manufacturer has ceased assembly of the engine originally designed for the YT 16. Sears does, however, sell 16-horsepower engines that adapt sufficiently to this model. Likewise, the pulleys -- rotating axles with belts which direct engine force -- for idling and for driving gears are also functional stand-ins for the originals. Whereas the muffler must be found from other sources, the muffler gasket remains in stock, along with the shift rod and pedal cover.

    Mower Parts

    • Craftsman no longer assembles mower housing for the YT 16. However, parts remaining in the Sears inventory include the mandrel, which draws the cut grass through the mower, and the blade stop pedals. The jack shaft to which gears are attached is also available from Craftsman. Consumers can purchase idler arms from the retailer. This part provides guidance to the steering system when mowing. The idler serves as a transitional point when shifting gears.
