How to Replace a Belt on an LA150 John Deere Lawn Tractor

The John Deere LA150 is a basic riding lawn mower equipped with a double-blade suspended mower deck attached to a lawn tractor. As with all John Deere lawn tractors outfitted with a mower deck, the deck runs off the clutch pulley mounted under the engine. A drive belt connects the clutch pulley and the drive pulleys on the mower deck to power the mower blades. When the belt wears out, you must replace it with a new one.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a wooden block under the right and left sides of the John Deere LA150 mower deck. Lower the mower deck onto the blocks by moving the PTO lever located on the right rear fender to the forward position. This drops the deck onto the blocks and releases pressure on the linkage rods.

    • 2

Pull the hairpins out of each linkage rod, then pull the washer off the linage rod pins. Pull the linkage rods off the linkage rod pins to complete the deck uninstall.

    • 3

Slide the deck forward to loosen tension on the belt. Pull the belt off the pulley mounted under the LA150's engine.

    • 4

Slide the deck out from under the LA150 and take the belt off the drive pulleys on the mower deck.

    • 5

Place the new belt onto the drive pulleys, taking care to route the belt correctly. If you feel you might not remember how to route the belt, make a picture of the belt and pulley system before you take the old belt off.

    • 6

Slide the mower deck under the LA150 and place the belt around the clutch pulley.

    • 7

Place the linkage rods onto the linkage rod pins. Place the washers onto the linkage rod pins. Insert the hairpins into the linkage rod pins to secure everything.
