How to Remove the Nut From a Cub Cadet Push Lawnmower

The Cub Cadet push lawn mower has two nuts you must remove to provide the necessary maintenance to keep your mower operational, adding years to its life. Lawn mowers are not self-sufficient, and you must maintain them similar to your automobile. You must change the oil and air filter at least once a mowing season, sharpen the blades at least once a month and keep fresh gas in the tank.

Things You'll Need

  • Siphon hose
  • 2-inch-by-4-inch dimensional lumber
  • Leather work gloves
  • 5/8-inch socket
  • Long-handled breaker bar
  • Phillips or slotted screwdriver
  • Long-shafted heavy-duty screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the spark plug wire off the spark plug on the Cub Cadet push mower. This decreases the chance of the lawnmower starting accidentally and causing injury.

    • 2

Siphon the gas from the gas tank with a siphon hose. This reduces the chance of an accidental fuel spill and a fire hazard.

    • 3

Move the speed control on the lawnmower to the lowest speed.

    • 4

Lay the Cub Cadet on the left side. This places the air filter at the top of the engine and the oil tank on the bottom next to the ground. This avoids oil draining into the air filter.

    • 5

Block the blade with a piece of 2-inch-by-4-inch dimensional lumber to keep it from turning. Wear leather work gloves to protect your hands should you inadvertently grab the mower blade.

    • 6

Remove the nut on the mower blade with a 5/8-inch socket attached to a long-handled breaker bar. The long handle gives you more leverage to loosen the nut.

    • 7

Turn the nut counterclockwise to remove it. Remove the blade from the mower and set it aside.

    • 8

Remove the three screws holding the plastic housing attached to the Cub Cadet mower deck with a screwdriver. Pull the plastic housing from the mower to expose the drain nut, the drive bracket and the linkage cable on the underside of the lawn mower.

    • 9

Apply force with a long-shafted heavy-duty screwdriver to the drive bracket to rotate the bracket counterclockwise. This disconnects the linkage cable and removes the drive bracket so you can access the drain nut.

    • 10

Twist the drain nut counterclockwise with a box-end adjustable wrench to remove it from the Cub Cadet push mower and drain the oil.
