How to Replace the Belt on a Craftsman Statesman

Although branded the "Craftsman" Statesman, the Statesman lawnmower is actually a re-branded MTD self-propelled push mower sold by the Sears Corporation. The self-propelled mower uses a small Kevlar belt to run the propelling system off a pulley mounted to the main shaft of the motor. When the belt ages, it stretches and eventually starts to slip on the main-shaft pulley. This reduces the operating speed of the propelling system and reduces mowing efficiency. Correct the problem by replacing the belt with a new one.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the mower without the propelling system until the mower runs out of gas. Double check the oil filler plug to ensure it is tight.

    • 2

Remove the screws that secure the large black cover onto the front top of the mower deck with a screwdriver. Press in on the sides of the cover, then place the cover off to the side.

    • 3

Locate the tensioning screw between the transmission housing and the transmission pulley. Turn the screw counterclockwise. At the same time, pull on the drive belt. Continue turning the screw until you can pull the drive belt off the transmission pulley.

    • 4

Place the mower on its side and pull the belt through the access hole in the mower deck.

    • 5

Pull the belt off the main-shaft pulley mounted between the bottom of the deck and the mower blade. Be cautious; do not cut yourself on the mower blade.

    • 6

Place the new belt around the main-shaft pulley and then pull it through the access hole in the mower deck.

    • 7

Place the belt around the transmission pulley and then tighten the screw until the belt becomes tight.

    • 8

Place the mower back on all four wheels and secure the cover to the top corner of the mower deck.
