How to Change a Yard-Man Riding Lawn Mower Belt

The Yard-Man riding mower, manufactured by MTD manufacturing uses a traditional suspended mower deck for cutting grass. As usual, the mower deck runs off a serpentine drive belt that turns the spindle pulleys, which in turn spins the mower blades. The serpentine belt gets its drive power from the PTO clutch pulley, which follows suit with traditional mowers as the PTO pulley mounts under the engine. As the drive belt on your Yard-Man riding mower deteriorates, the belt starts to slip around the PTO clutch pulley. When this happens, you must replace the belt before it snaps in half.

Instructions

    • 1

Press in on the Yard-Man's clutch pedal and then press the parking brake to secure the mower in place.

    • 2

Disengage the PTO clutch pulley by moving the PTO lever to the "off" position. Lower the deck to its lowest position with the deck level adjustment lever.

    • 3

Remove the belt guard that connects to the Yard-Man's PTO pulley located under the engine. Use a socket to remove the bolts that hold the guard in place. With the guard removed, pull the belt off the PTO pulley

    • 4

Remove the belt guards on the mower deck with the wrench and then place the guards off to the side. With the guards removed, pull the old belts off the pulley. If you need to, make a picture of how the belt routes around the pulleys.

    • 5

Install the new belt onto the Yard-Man's pulley system and then reattach the belt guards.

    • 6

Pull the belt forward and place it onto the PTO clutch pulley. With the belt in place, reattach the PTO clutch pulley belt guard.
