Remove the hex-head bolts that secure the black plastic housing on top of the mower with a socket and ratchet. The housing is the drive belt cover. Squeeze the sides of the cover and pull the cover off the mower deck. Place the cover to the side.
Locate the drive belt tension screw between the transmission pulley and transmission housing. Turn the screw counterclockwise to loose tension in the belt. As you tune the screw, pull up on the drive belt. Keep turning the screw until you have enough slack in the belt to remove it from the pulley.
Position the MTD mower on its side so the air cleaner housing faces up. This prevents gas from running out of the carburetor and into the air cleaner.
Pull the belt through the hole in the deck housing, then remove the belt from the pulley mounted between the mower blade and the mower deck. This is the mainshaft pulley.
Place the replacement belt onto the mainshaft pulley and pull the remainder of the belt though the hole in the mower deck. Keep pressure on the belt to prevent it from falling off the mainshaft pulley while you slip the belt onto the transmission pulley.
Tighten the tensioner screw on the transmission until the belt rests tight on the pulleys.
Place the mower back onto all four wheels and install the transmission cover.
