How to Clean a Lawnmower

Common rotary-style lawnmowers require seasonal cleaning to remove dirt and grease that could impede the mower's performance. The entire machine requires cleaning at the beginning and end of the mowing season, while certain lawnmower components require more regular cleaning or replacement. Periodic lawnmower maintenance will keep the machine working longer and will prevent expensive repairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear work gloves to prevent cutting yourself on the mower's blades.

    • 2

Turn the lawnmower over with the air filter side up to prevent oil from draining.

    • 3

Detach the spark plug wire to prevent the engine from starting.

    • 4

Remove and inspect the spark plug. Discard and replace it if it looks worn or corroded. In general, spark plugs need replacement after 100 hours of mower use. Wipe a dirty spark plug with a rag and degreaser.

    • 5

Remove the air filter and replace it if it is very dirty. Tap the filter on a hard, flat surface to remove moderate dirt. Check the air filter after 25 hours of mower use.

Spray the mower housing with a hard stream of water to remove dirt and debris. Use a scraping tool to remove any heavy buildup that the water doesn't dislodge.
