How to Put a Belt on a Craftsman Kohler V-Twin Riding Lawn Mower

Some people like V-twin motorcycles due to their power and torque. Others like V-twin lawn mowers for the same reason. The Craftsman Kohler V-Twin lawn mower has a 24-horsepower engine, which is considerable for a lawn mower. It also comes equipped with a large 48-inch cutting deck. Just like regular lawn mowers, the V-Twin engine has a PTO pulley mounted under it that drives the mower belt, which runs around a pulley system on the mower deck. Eventually, the Kevlar belt ages must be replaced. Otherwise, the belt will continue to stretch until it simply breaks.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the mower deck clutch into the neutral position via the clutch lever. This is the normal process for turning off the mower blades when you're done mowing.

    • 2

Place the lift lever located on the right side of mower deck to the forward position to lower the mower deck to its lowest position.

    • 3

Locate the belt tension rod on the back of the mower deck and disconnect it with a wrench. This loosens tension on the mower deck drive belt.

    • 4

Remove the retainer spring from the anti-sway bar located on the back of the mower deck with a spring puller.

    • 5

Remove all of the retainer springs from the deck's suspension system. There are two in the front and two in the back. Use a spring puller to remove the springs.

    • 6

Lift the mower deck to its highest position and slide the deck forward.

    • 7

Pull the belt off the PTO pulley coming from the bottom of the engine and slide the belt out through the right side of the mower.

    • 8

Remove the bolts that hold the mandrel housings onto the top of the mower deck with a wrench and place the housings off to the side.

    • 9

Remove the old belt from the deck and then install the new belt onto the deck. Route the belt correctly. If needed, make a diagram of the belt to ensure you route it properly.

    • 10

Slide the deck under the mower and ratchet the belt to the PTO pulley.

    • 11

Lower the deck lever to the lowest position.

    • 12

Reattach the retainer springs to the front mounts, rear mounts and to the anti-sway bar on the back of the mower deck.

    • 13

Reconnect the belt tension rod on the back of the mower with the spring puller.
