How to Adjust a Snapper Belt

Your Snapper mower deck has a built-in idler pulley. An older pulley mounts to a spring-loaded plate and rides against the mower deck's drive belt. The only purpose of the idler pulley is to maintain tension on the belt as it stretches to keep it in proper adjustment. However, the spring on the idler pulley has its limitations and when the belt stretches too far, the idler pulley no longer has the ability to compensate for the added length of the belt. The only way to adjust the belt after this happens is to replace it with a completely new belt.

Instructions

    • 1

Park your Snapper lawn mower on level ground. Turn off the mower deck by placing the deck lever to the "off" position and then lower the mower deck to the ground with the deck height lever. Remove the ignition key from the ignition to stop the engine.

    • 2

Locate the clutch pulley mounted to the main shaft on the bottom of the engine. It is the only pulley under the engine. Pull the mower deck drive belt off the pulley.

    • 3

Pull the belt back to the mower deck and then remove the belt form the pulleys on the mower deck.

    • 4

Install the new belt. It can become confusing when installing the belt onto the deck. If you feel you will have issues with routing the new belt, make a diagram before you take the old belt off.

    • 5

Place the drive belt over the pulley mounted under the Snapper's motor.

    • 6

Lift the mower deck to your desired cutting height and then engage the mower deck before you start mowing again.
