How to Put on a McLane Lawn Mower Replacement Belt

The McLane self-propelled reel mower does not use a single blade that spins in a horizontal circular motion like most push mowers. Instead, it has several blades connected to a barrel. As you mow, the barrel rolls and this is what cuts the grass. To make the task easier, McLane installed a self-propelled belt drive system. The belt is Kevlar and will take a long time to wear out. When it does, this will prevent the mower from moving forward with ease. At this point you must replace the belt to correct the issue.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the four bolts that secure the rear deck guard onto the back of the mower. Use a socket and ratchet to remove the bolts. Place the guard off to the side to expose the transmission drive for the powered rear wheels.

    • 2

Remove the two screws that hold the front belt guard over the front pulley for the drive system. The guard is on the right side of the mower, if you position yourself behind the mower. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws and then place the belt guard off to the side.

    • 3

Locate the idler pulley between the rear pulley and the front pulley. Push in on the idler pulley to release pressure on the belt. With the idler pulley pushed down, pull the belt off the front and back pulleys.

    • 4

Place the new belt onto the front and back pulleys and then release the idler pulley to increase tension on the belt.

    • 5

Place the front belt cover onto the mower and secure it with both screws.

    • 6

Place the rear deck cover in place and secure it with the four bolts.
