How to Lift a Brush Hog

A brush hog is a tractor-pulled implement sold by various companies under different names that is used for clearing heavy brush and small trees. Rather than one straight rigid blade, brush hogs incorporate two separate blades mounted on a T-shaft on the end of the implement's gearbox drive shaft. Centrifugal force holds each blade out straight as the T-shaft spins unless the blade hits something. When the blade strikes an object, it gives way rather than breaking. As with any cutting implement, the blades on a brush hog occasionally need sharpening or replacement. In order to do that the brush hog needs to be lifted off the ground.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the two lift arms of the tractor to the lower attachment points on the brush hog. Connect the top shaft from the tractor to the upper attaching point on the brush hog.

    • 2

Tighten the top shaft between the tractor's three-point hitch and the brush hog by turning the turnbuckle of the shaft counterclockwise using the turnbuckle's handle, until the brush hog is level.

    • 3

Start the tractor. Make sure the power take off (PTO) is disengaged and the tractor's parking brake is on.

    • 4

Lift the brush hog by moving the three-point hitch's height control lever on the tractor to the "Raise" position.
