How to Troubleshoot a Cub Cadet 926 STE

Troubleshooting a Cub Cadet 926 STE snow thrower is a must if your unit is not functioning properly. As snow piles up, the driveway can become blocked and the sidewalk is piled with an icy mess. Clearing your property of snow can be accomplished with your Cub Cadet once you get it back in operation. Cub Cadet offers an operator's guide to help you become familiar with your snow thrower parts and help you uncover the source of any problems.

Review the Cub Cadet 926 STE operator's manual (see resources) and become familiar with the location of each part. Check the fuel tank if the engine will not start. Fill the tank with gas if it is empty. Verify the choke is set to the "on" position. Inspect the safety key to be sure it is completely in the ignition switch on the engine. Reconnect the spark plug wire if it has slipped off. Make sure the fuel shut-off valve is open.

    • 2

Check the fuel line to verify it is not blocked if the engine is running erratically or not at all. Remove fuel from tank. Replace gasoline with a fresh tank.

    • 3

Clean any ice or snow off the gas cap if the power shuts off on your Cub Cadet 926 STE. Check the vent hole to verify it is clear. Tighten the spark plug wires.

    • 4

Turn off the Cub Cadet 926 STE if it is vibrating excessively. Remove the spark plug wire. Check each of the nuts and bolts, tightening as necessary.

    • 5

Adjust the traction control cable if the Cub Cadet snow thrower does not propel. Apply a wrench to the jam nut on the traction control cable to loosen. Twist to unthread the cable. Adjust until the traction control is working properly. Secure the cable by tightening the jam nut.

Unscrew the two screws on the plastic belt at the front of the Cub Cadet engine. Remove the gas from the tank. Turn the snow thrower in an upward direction, resting on the auger housing. Unscrew the six frame cover screws on the underside of the Cub Cadet. Grasp the idler pulley and lift, then remove the drive belt from the wheel. Pull back on the stop bolt until the support bracket is positioned on the auger pulley. Remove the belt, then replace with a new one. Return the support bracket to the original position on the stop bolt.

Check all the electrical connections if the chute does not turn. Verify each wire is tight. Inspect the #5A fuse beneath the handle panel. Replace with a new one if it has blown. Disconnect the switch connector if the chute is turning the wrong way. Turn the connector so that it moves in the same direction as the switch. Plug in the switch connector after adjusting.
