How to Start an IC Lawnmower

Most motorized lawnmowers use an IC or "internal combustion" engine. This is the same type of engine in your car or in most other gasoline-powered engines. The process for starting a small engine IC motor commonly found on push mowers differs slightly from the small engines commonly found on riding mowers. Both types are straightforward and will only take a short while to master, however.

Instructions

  1. Push Mower

    • 1

Locate the fuel valve next to the carburetor and turn it to the "On" position.

    • 2

Move the throttle lever located on the handle to the "Choke" position. In some cases, the lever is on the mower's motor.

    • 3

Pull on the flywheel clutch lever to enable the mower for starting. If your mower has a self-propelled system, turn it off. Otherwise, the mower will lurch forward when you attempt to start the engine.

    • 4

Pull on the pull starter cord until the engine starts.

    • 5

Place the choke onto "Fast" or "Slow" after two or three minutes warm up time. In some cases, the choke will turn off on its own.

    Riding Mower

    • 6

Position yourself in the seat. The mower will not start unless you are in the seat. It has a safety switch mounted under the seat.

    • 7

Set the parking brake to prevent the mower form moving when you start it.

    • 8

Place the engine throttle control to "Choke," lift the PTO lever to its highest position and then place the gear selector in "neutral."

    • 9

Turn the ignition key to the "On" position to start the engine.

    • 10

Position the throttle control to "Slow" for one minute to warm up the engine. After one minute, you can change to "Fast" and begin to mow.
