How to Take a Mowing Deck Off of a Scotts Riding Lawnmower

The mower deck on your Scotts lawnmower uses a drive belt to function properly. During each riding season, you must inspect and replace this belt, along with inspecting and replacing the blades under the mower deck. For both operations, you must remove the mower deck. Fortunately, the process of removing the mower deck does not require the assistance of a service center. You can complete the job in your own yard or garage.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the mower, set the parking brake and turn the PTO lever to the "Off" position to stop the mower blade from engaging.

    • 2

Raise the mower deck lever to the "Transport" location, which is the highest point to which you can raise the mower deck.

    • 3

Set the cutting height knob to 25mm or 1 inch.

    • 4

Place a wooden block under the right and left sides of the mower deck. The blocks will help support the mower deck during the removal process.

    • 5

Lower the mower deck lever to the "Mowing" position to drop the deck onto the wooden blocks.

    • 6

Release the drive belt tensioning rod, located on the left side of the mower deck, from the bracket located at the front of the deck. This releases tension on the drive belt.

    • 7

Pull the drive belt off of the drive belt pulley located under the engine.

    • 8

Locate the lever between the front left wheel and the mower's frame. Release the lever to disengage the front lift rod assembly. Remove the assembly from the mower deck.

    • 9

Pull the spring loaded J-pins out of the daft arms located on the left and right sides of the mower deck. The daft arms secure the mower deck to the underside of the mower.

    • 10

Raise the mower deck lever to the "Transport" location to separate the lift arms from the mower deck then slide the mower out from under the mower deck.
