Cub Cadet Blade Will Not Spin

If you look at the top of your Cub Cadet mower deck, it may become obvious why your mower blades will not spin. The deck runs off a serpentine belt, which uses a drive pulley mounted to the engine. As long as the engine starts, the drive pulley will turn. This means, the serpentine belt likely broke off and now there is no connection between the mower deck and drive pulley. Replacing the belt is relatively straightforward, as it does not require the removal of the mower deck to correct.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive the Cub Cadet onto flat ground, set the parking brake and lower the mower deck to its lowest position with the deck lever.

    • 2

Turn the Cub cadet off and turn off the PTO lever, which stops the mower blades from spinning.

    • 3

Remove the guard from the pulley that mounts under the engine with a wrench.

    • 4

Place the new belt onto the pulley and then reattach the belt guard over the pulley.

    • 5

Remove the two belt guards mounted over the two larger deck pulleys by removing the attachment screws with a screwdriver.

    • 6

Slide the belt through the two smaller pulleys mounted on the deck and then place the drive belt over one of the two larger pulleys on the mower deck.

    • 7

Place a 3/8-inch ratchet driver into the idler pulley located on the mower deck. The idler pulley is a spring-loaded pulley and mounts to a metal plate with a 3/8-inch hole cut into it. The pulley rests next to an identical sized pulley, which does not have a spring-loaded bracket.

    • 8

Rotate the idler pulley away from the belt and then wrap the belt around the second large pulley on the mower deck. Let go of the idler pulley and remove the ratchet from the mounting bracket.

    • 9

Pace the belt guards onto the mower deck and secure them both with the screws and screwdriver.
