How to Adjust the Drive on a Dixon 3304

Riding mowers are helpful in cutting lawns or public areas too large for a push mower and too small for a larger riding motor. Riding mowers in the Dixon 3000 series, including the 3304 model, feature precision handling, a compact-body style and finger-tip controls. The mowers are made of polythylene, feature swing-out control levers and a patented transaxle drive system. Adjusting the drive requires a knowledge of transaxles and the applicable tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the rear pivot bolts and hole, bell crank pivots, ball joints, double-ball joints, torque and neutral rods and bearings of the transaxle for excessive wear or breaks. Replace parts, if necessary.

    • 2

Use an 11/16-inch open-neck wrench to loosen the lock nuts on the 2166 pivot bolts located at the rear of the transaxle. Loosen the outside lock nuts on the torque rods at two points using a 1/2-inch open- or box-end wrench.

    • 3

Use a 1/2-inch open-end wrench to tighten the inside torque rod nut. Tighten the Allen head pivot bolt with an Allen wrench. Turn the inside torque rod nut two turns for every one turn of the Allen head pivot bolt until the discup locks on the cone and cannot be turned.

    • 4

Use the Dixon special tool to release the front or rear of the discup (whichever is bound more inward). Adjust the outward side to square the discup so that it is perpendicular to the back frame of the transaxle. Reattach the other side.

    • 5

Loosen the adjustment bolts so that the cones and cups have slight drag but no gap. Loosen the pivot bolt about 1/3 of a turn and the T-rod nut 1/2 a turn to give a .020- to .025-inch gap between the cup and the cone for both sides of the transaxle.

    • 6

Turn the upper spring nut so that a five-thread neutral gap space is between the upper and lower cones. Reconnect the transaxle and adjust the control rods.

    • 7

Make sure the levers are slightly rearward or vertical and that the mower drives straight after reinstalling the drive.
