Types of Ride-On Mowers

Ride-on lawn mowers are popular with homeowners who have large properties because of their timesaving capabilities, versatility and comfort. These machines are designed primarily for the maintenance of large gardens or for wide expanses of grass. Two main types are available -- zero-turn-radius mowers and lawn tractors. A variety of attachments may be used with more expensive models to increase machine versatility.
  1. Zero-Turn-Radius

    • These mowers are appropriate for properties that are mostly flat but have lots of trees, flowers, bushes and other landscaping features. Mowing decks are placed in the front of the machine with the motor in the rear for easier maneuverability. These mowers are able to turn efficiently, eliminating the need for multiple turns in tight spaces. The most distinguishing characteristics of zero-turn-radius mowers are two-hand-grip lever controls, similar to those used to control tanks.

    Lawn Tractors

    • Also known as tractor mowers, these machines are used to mow large expanses of grass. Heavy-duty commercial models maintain golf courses, parks and similar areas. Mowing decks on lawn tractors are larger, ranging in size up to 54 inches, and even wider for some commercial models. Cutting blades are underneath the tractor, with a collection box for grass clippings sometimes located at the back. A series of levers and controls engage the cutting mechanisms and adjust blade height. Lawn tractors have wide pneumatic tires so they can easily traverse uneven terrain. Powerful engines provide a quick, but not fine, cut. Suggested engine horsepower ranges from 6.5 for under one-half acre to 15 for consistently cutting more than one acre in a single session.

    Features and Manufacturers

    • Zero-turn-radius mowers and lawn tractors share a number of common features. Both have either two or three rotary blades in the cutting deck. Automatic transmission is standard, with maximum speed approximately 15 mph. Ride-on mowers have a low center of gravity, which gives these machines good stability. The presence of a cargo box over the rear wheels will increase this characteristic. Glove compartments, side-by-side seats, headlights, cup holders and conveniences found in commercial automobiles are becoming increasingly common.

MTD, Toro, Snapper and John Deere are among the most popular brands. John Deere mowers are highly rated for their reliability. Toro is also known for reliability as well as specializing in zero-turn-radius mowers. Snapper's engines are among the most durable.

    Attachments

    • A range of attachments can increase the versatility of ride-on mowers. Available tools include snowplows, utility carts, grass catchers, shovels, lawn sleepers, front and rear blades, bucket holders, mid-mount scraper blades, mechanical drive tillers, cultivators and harrow disks, among others.
