How to Troubleshoot Exmark Zero Turn Riding Mowers

The Exmark Zero Turn riding mower is designed to make mowing around obstacles much easier than with a traditional riding mower. The operator turns the mower using two levers instead of a steering wheel, allowing each wheel to turn independently. The result of this steering design is a sharper turning radius, allowing the operator to mow around obstacles such as trees and shrubs quickly. If the Exmark mower will not start, there are troubleshooting steps the manufacturer suggests to correct the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the PTO (power take-off) to make sure the blades are disengaged. Push the PTO switch in all the way to disengage the blades. If the PTO is engaged, the mower will not start.

    • 2

Move the drive levers to the "Neutral Lock" position. Move the drive levers outward, using your hands. The drive levers must be in neutral or the engine will not crank.

    • 3

Check the fuel tank. If the fuel level is not near the full line indicator, add fuel. Check the fuel shutoff valve. If the valve is in the "Closed" position, move the valve to the "Open" position with your fingers. The valve will be parallel to the fuel line in the "Open" position.

Check the oil level. Remove the oil dipstick and wipe clean with a rag. Insert the oil dipstick for a few seconds and remove it. Observe the oil on the dipstick. If the oil level is low, add oil.

Check that the throttle and choke levers are in the correct position. The throttle lever should be positioned between the "Slow" and "Fast" indicators. The choke should be in the "On" position if the engine temperature is cold, and in the "Off" position if the engine temperature is warm.
