How to Install the Belt on a Scott L2548 48 25-Hp Lawn Tractor

If the mower drive belt on your Scotts L2548 48 inch, 25 HP lawn tractor has frayed edges, won't stay on the pulleys or sheaves, or breaks off, it's time to replace the belt. Check your belt after each use for normal wear and tear. Also check the belt after any accidental damage, even if minor, and install a new belt when necessary to keep your lawn tractor running safely and effectively.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the lawn tractor on a level surface.

    • 2

Remove the mower deck. Place wood blocks underneath each side of the mower deck, then place the lift lever in the lowest position so the deck rests on the blocks. Remove the two spring locking pins and washers on the rear arms on each side of the mower deck and disconnect the arms from the lawnmower body. Remove the spring locking pin and washer from the front draft rod, then remove the front draft rod from the mower deck bracket. Remove the drive belt by sliding it off the sheave, then remove the wood blocks and slide the mower out from under the machine.

    • 3

Place the mower deck on a flat surface. Unscrew the seven cap screws securing the right and left belt shields with a wrench, place them in a safe place, then remove the shields. Note the belt placement.

    • 4

Loosen the two front black sheaves, one large and one smaller directly behind it, with a wrench. Remove the belt and clean the mower deck surface and sheaves with water, if needed.

    • 5

Install a new belt. Place one end of the belt over the furthest sheave on the right and left side. From the right, stretch the belt to the inside of the smaller black sheave, then to the outside of the silver sheave in the top center of the mower deck, then to the inside of the smaller black sheave. From the right side, stretch the belt around the inside of the larger black sheave. Stretch the remainder to the top of the mower deck; this will fasten to the machine when you replace the mower deck.

    • 6

Make sure the belt is in the groove of each sheave, and then tighten the two black sheaves to 35 lb-ft of torque with a torque wrench.

    • 7

Reinstall the belt shields, and then reinstall the mower deck. Installation is the opposite of removal.
