How to Test the Seat Safety Switch on the LX255 John Deere

The John Deere LX255 mower was produced from 1999 to 2001 and came equipped with a 15-horsepower, one-cylinder Kohler engine. The LX255 was available with 42, 44, 46 and 48-inch blade decks, as well as a 42-inch snow thrower attachment; it was also available with a bagging attachment, versus the standard mulching factory setup. The seat safety switch on the LX255 is responsible only for allowing the mower to start when the seat has weight placed upon it -- the mower will not start if the safety switch or the wiring are defective.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the seat by tilting it forward over the steering wheel.

    • 2

Check the switch condition, located beneath the seat. If the switch has any signs of melted or damaged casing, or if the wires leading to the switch are exposed, the switch will need to be replaced.

    • 3

Depress the switch manually, using a screwdriver. Start the mower. If the mower starts when the switch is depressed, then the switch is good. If the mower does not start, proceed to Step 4.

    • 4

Turn the ohmmeter to the "V" option -- for reading volts. Attach the red probe from the ohmmeter to the white wire on the switch. Attach the black wire on the ohmmeter to the black wire on the switch. Depress the switch with a screwdriver. Ask your assistant to turn on the ignition key. Read the volts going to the switch. If the switch registers no voltage on the ohmmeter, then the switch needs to be replaced.
