How to Open the OHC Cover of a Honda Lawn Mower

Regular maintenance to your Honda lawn mower such as oil changes, cleaning the air filter and changing the spark plug helps to keep your mower running at peak efficiency. Normally it is not necessary to perform any major work, especially on th OHC models. Occasionally, though, you might find it necessary to adjust the valve clearance on an older unit. Adjusting the valves is not a major task, but does require some disassembly of the mower. Opening the OHC cover of a Honda mower includes removing the top cover to access the upper securing bolts of the valve cover.

Unplug the spark plug wire from the top of the spark plug on the Honda mower. The spark plug is between the top of the OHC valve cover and the mower cover.

    • 2

Find the six screws securing the top cover to the mower. There are two in the front, two in the back and one on each side. Remove the screws with a nut driver. Slowly lift the cover off the engine, and allow it to recoil against the handle bar. The starter rope recoil will keep the cover out of your way.

Remove the four screws securing the silver OHC cover to the lawn mower with a socket wrench. Slide a putty knife between the cover and the engine, and separate the cover from the engine.
