How to Repair a Cub Cadet

Cub Cadet is the brand name of a popular line of riding lawn mowers. Cud Cadet mowers are generally durable and do not need service often, barring routine maintenance. When they do break down or perform poorly there are a number of things that can be checked at home, like the battery, fuel level and spark plug. These repairs do not typically require a lot of mechanical experience and can be done in an hour or two.

Instructions

Open the gas tank and make sure there is fuel in it. If the Cub Cadet's tank is empty, fill it with fuel.

    • 2

Open the engine cover on the Cub Cadet. Turn the multimeter on and set it to the voltage setting. Touch the negative meter lead to the negative battery terminal and touch the positive lead to the positive battery terminal. If the reading falls below 12 volts the battery should be changed. To do this, remove the battery cables with a socket set and pull the old battery out. Set a new battery in and attach the battery cables with the socket set.

Remove the spark plug wire by snapping it off from the top by hand. Remove the spark plug with the spark plug wrench. If the plug appears old, dirty or otherwise fouled, replace it with a new spark plug. Screw it in by hand and then tighten it with the spark plug wrench. Snap the plug wire back on top of the plug.

Remove the engine oil dipstick, wipe it with a rag, place it back in and pull it out again. If the oil level is below the low indicator marker on the dipstick remove the oil cap and add engine oil.

Loosen the plastic nut holding the air filter cover in place. Remove the wing nut underneath it by hand and then take the element cover off. Pull out both the foam precleaner and the air filter. If dirty, replace the air filter with a new one and rinse out the foam precleaner with warm water and allow it to dry before putting it back in.
