How to Level a Murray Deck

Murray yard and garden tractors provid owners with many hours of efficient operation. Fitted with a mower deck, Murray tractors are primarily used on lawns too large for the typical walk-behind lawnmower. If the Murray mower deck is level, the blade will cut grass with greater ease and the lawn's appearance will be improved. You can level the deck on your Murray lawn tractor with a few tools and basic mechanical ability.

Instructions

    • 1

Park your Murray mower on a hard, flat surface. Turn off the engine, remove the ignition key and set the hand brake.

    • 2

Check the air pressure in the tires using an air pressure gauge. The tires should be inflated to 14 psi. If the tires require inflation, use an air pump to raise the pressure to the correct amount.

    • 3

Lift open the deck adjustment cover in front of the lift lever handle, and move the lift lever forward to the level-adjustment position.

    • 4

Loosen the left and right mower deck adjuster knobs by turning each one counterclockwise by hand. The knobs are located on either side of the deck. If the handles are too tight, use lock-jaw pliers for added leverage.

    • 5

Push down on each side of the mower housing until both sides of the housing are flat on the ground surface.

    • 6

Push down on the slotted lift links behind the adjustment knobs. Tighten the left and right adjuster knobs by hand. Use the lock-jaw pliers if leverage is needed.

    • 7

Raise the lift lever from the adjustment position and close the cover.

    • 8

Operate the mower to check for a level cut.

    • 9

Repeat steps 3 through 7 if necessary.
