How to Replace the Wheel Bearing on a John Deere STX38

The John Deere STX38 had two production runs: from 1988 to 1993 and from 1994 to 1997. The 1988 to 1993 STX38 was known as the "Yellow Deck" mower. The 1994 to 1997 STX38 was the "Black Deck" mower. The part numbers for the front wheel bearing replacement are the same for both models. The wheel bearings on the STX38 are mounted inside the hubs of the front wheels, with the front spindle axle mounted through the bearings. Both front bearings should be replaced at the same time, to ensure stability in the drive system.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the front of the mower with a jack. Place jack stands beneath the side rails of the front chassis, rearward from the front wheels. Remove the wheel covers with a flat-blade screwdriver, if equipped.

    • 2

Remove the hub cover from the center of one wheel, with pliers or channel locks. Remove the snap ring from the end of the axle with snap ring pliers. Pull the front wheel off of the mower completely. Insert a flat blade screwdriver through the center hub hole, from the back of the wheel. Push the old wheel bearing free of the wheel, and discard it.

    • 3

Install the front wheel back onto the spindle axle. Insert the wheel bearing onto the wheel, and use the screwdriver to push it as far onto the axle as possible. Fill the entire center hub area with bearing grease. Install a new snap ring onto the end of the axle. Fill the center hub cover with bearing grease, then push into the center of the wheel by hand.

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to complete the wheel bearing replacement on the second side of the STX38.

    • 5

Raise the mower off of the jack stand, then remove the stands from beneath the mower. Lower the mower to the ground gently. Install the wheel covers if equipped, by hand.
