How to Troubleshoot a John Deere Lawn Tractor Engine

John Deere lawn tractors make mowing a large yard or acreage much easier than a traditional push mower. These tractors feature a small engine that provides power to the drive system and the mowing deck. The engine is a traditional combustion type that uses oil to lubricate internal components and gasoline for the combustion process. Although the lawn tractor engine is designed to last for many years, sometimes you may experience problems that require some troubleshooting.

Check the gas tank to make sure the tank is full. If the amount of gas is below the full line, you may need to add more gas.

    • 2

Verify that the spark plug wire is connected properly. Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug with your fingers. Push the spark plug wire onto the spark plug firmly.

    • 3

Inspect the spark plug. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Loosen the spark plug with a socket wrench then remove it from the engine. Inspect the spark plug for cracks or an excessive buildup of oil or carbon. If necessary, install a new spark plug. Connect the spark plug wire to the spark plug with your fingers.

Disengage the mower blades. The engine will not start if the mower blades are engaged. Move the blade lever to the "Disengaged" position.

    • 5

Press the clutch pedal firmly while starting the engine. The engine will not start if the clutch pedal is not fully depressed.
