How to Troubleshoot the Starting of an MTD Riding Mower

The MTD riding lawnmower is designed to make mowing large yards less time-consuming than it would be with an older push mower. If your MTD riding mower will not start, you need to follow a few troubleshooting steps that the manufacturer has recommended. The troubleshooting steps check for the three primary needs of any small engine, including fuel, air supply and ignition spark. Troubleshooting the MTD mower usually takes only a few minutes, and requires only basic tools.

Check the amount of fuel in the fuel tank. If the fuel level is close to empty, add more fuel until the fuel level is near the "Full" mark.

Check the spark plug lead. The spark plug lead should be firmly attached to the spark plug. Locate the spark plug near the front of the engine. Push the spark plug lead onto the spark plug firmly, using your fingers.
