Change the engine oil at regular intervals. Each model is slightly different, but all models require regular oil changes to function at peak performance. Your specific model's owner's manual will help you determine exactly when to change the oil.

    • 2

Check the transmission fluid level before each use. Pull the transmission fluid dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag. Insert the dipstick into the transmission and remove it. Verify that the fluid level is sufficient. Add transmission fluid if necessary.

    • 3

Sharpen the mowing blades. Grasshopper recommends sharpening the blades every eight hours of use. The blades should be sharpened only by an experienced mechanic. If the blades cannot be sharpened, install new blades.

    • 4

Clean the mower. Lower the mowing deck, and use compressed air if possible to blow out any dirt and debris. Open the engine compartment and clean the engine and all movable parts, using compressed air.

    • 5

Check the air pressure in all the tires. Use a tire pressure gauge to check the air pressure in each tire. Compare the gauge reading to the air pressure listed on each tire. Add air to the tires if necessary.

Replace the spark plug. Remove the spark plug lead, using your fingers. Use a socket wrench to remove the spark plug. Install a new spark plug, and tighten it securely. Push the spark plug lead onto the spark plug.
