Check for fuel in the fuel tank if the mower turns over but doesn't start. Add fuel, if necessary. If the mower doesn't turn over, lift the seat and check the battery connections. If the battery connections are clear of rust or acid, you may need to remove the battery and have it checked at a dealer or auto parts store.
Replace the spark plug if the mower still doesn't start. Lift the hood and find the spark plug near the front of the engine. Pull the spark plug lead off the plug, using your fingers. Remove the spark plug, using a socket wrench. Install a new spark plug and tighten securely. Push the spark plug lead onto the spark plug.
Clean the air filter if the engine runs rough or dies often. Remove the cleaner housing retaining nut, using your fingers. Lift off the air cleaner housing to access the air filter. Remove the air filter and clean it with soap and water. Reinstall the air filter and air cleaner cover. Tighten the retaining nut, using your fingers.
Check the fuel filter. The fuel filter is between the gas tank and the engine. Drain the gas tank if necessary. Remove the hose clamps from both sides of the fuel filter, using a screwdriver. Remove the filter and discard. Install a new fuel filter and connect the fuel line. Tighten the hose clamps, using a screwdriver.
Inspect the mower blades. If the mower blades are bent or too dull, the mower may not cut the grass properly. Have the blades sharpened or install new blades.
