Pull the spark plug wire off the spark plug and position it where the wire cannot come in contact with the spark plug. This prevents any possibility of the mower coming on while you work on the blade.
Place the mower on its side so the air cleaner faces upward. Facing the air cleaner upward prevents gas from flowing out of the carburetor.
Wedge a wooden block between the mower housing and the blade to prevent the blade from rotating while you turn it. This leaves both hands free to work on the mower and helps to minimize the risk of your cutting yourself.
Remove the bolt located at the center of the blade with a socket and ratchet. This bolt holds the blade onto the main shaft of the mower. When you pull the bolt off, pull the lock washer and hardened washer off.
Pull the blade off the main shaft and then slide the new blade onto the main shaft.
Slide the lock washer and then the hardened washer onto the bolt and then secure the bolt into the mineshaft with the socket and ratchet. Make sure you wedge the wooden block between the replacement blade and the mower deck housing before you tighten the bolt back into place.
Remove the wooden block, place the mower on all four wheels and then reconnect the spark plug wire.
