Gravely 310 Lawn Mower Problems

The Gravely 310 lawn mower is a riding lawn mower from the "Promaster" series of Gravely mowers. This larger mower can eat up a lot of area in a relatively short time, but common problems can affect the mower's ability to either start or cut its ignition once it has started. These problems may be a result of low gas, a faulty spark plug, an incorrectly spaced air gap, or even a disconnected grounding wire. Fortunately, you can repair your Gravely 310 lawn mower problems irrespective of your experience with fixing mowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the fuel levels in your Gravely 310 lawn mower if the engine cranks but the mower refuses to start. You may simply be out of fuel and need to refill your tank.

    • 2

Replace your spark plug if the Gravely 310 lawn mower's fuel levels are sufficient but it still will not start despite cranking. Open the front engine cover and find the single, black plug wire extending into your spark plug. Disconnect this wire from the spark plug and remove the plug. Replace the spark plug with a new one.

Check the air gap of your Gravely 310 lawn mower if ignition problems continue. The air gap is the aperture between the magnetic coil and the flywheel in the engine assembly. You can find the magnetic coil by following the spark plug's wire to the rear of the engine assembly, where it comes to rest beside this circular coil. Directly behind the coil and nearly touching it is the flywheel. The small aperture between the coil and flywheel is the air gap, and this gap should only be between 0.010 and 0.015 of an inch in width. This is about the thickness of a playing card. Measure for this thickness.

Adjust the air gap if it has grown too wide. Loosen the magnetic coil with a wrench and then push the outside of the coil inward so as to close the gap between it and the flywheel. Remeasure the gap to ensure it meets specifications.

Find the black grounding wire beside the flywheel if the Gravely 310 lawn mower engine runs even when you attempt to cut the ignition. This ground wire will likely be disconnected from the connection plug it's laying upon. Plug it back in to restore your ability to cut the engine.
