John Deere Mower Safety

Although the John Deere brand makes large commercial equipment such as tractors and combine harvesters, they also make lawn mowers for residential use. Regardless of size, safety must be of concern when using. Since their mowers have hot engines and spinning blades, consider these inherent dangers before using them.
  1. Parts Safety

    • General parts safety is a priority when operating any John Deere mower. Ensure all screws, nuts and bolts are at least hand tight, especially on any parts directly used by the operator. Loose parts like the push handle on a push mower can cause a loss of balance or control and induce injury. Replace severely worn or damaged parts before operation.

Carefully inspect any safety parts for wear and tear since they are designed to provide you the most protection during operation. Some John Deere mowers like the G110 model have a safety switch underneath the chair.

    Powered Mowers

    • Powered John Deere Mowers like the X300 series tractors have an additional danger because of the larger engines. Engines can be extremely hot to touch immediately after operation. Thus, you should not place your bare skin or any highly flammable objects near them. Allow the engines to cool down before storing the mower in enclosed spaces. Also, ensure that these storage spaces do not also house fuel or pilot lights, since they can combust due to the engine's heat. Larger mowers, like the John Deere Z925A, have a parking brake that you should fully engage when storing it.

    Blade

    • John Deere Mower blades, whether on powered or nonpowered equipment, can become dangerous once they are in operation. The EZ Trak, Zero-Turn mowers have a set of three blades designed to cut up to a 54-inch radius. These blades are can cut you upon touch, so never put any body parts in the immediate vicinity during operation.

    Operation

    • Before operation, make sure you have on sturdy clothing such as jeans and boots. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry as they can get caught on moving parts. Be wary of any foreign objects in the mowing area that can get caught in the blades. Remove them if possible. Also ensure children and small pets are nowhere near the John Deere mower during operation. Do not allow them to ride on the mower or attachments even when it is not in operation. They can fall and hurt themselves.
