How to Pull the Flywheel From a Lawnmower

The flywheel of a lawnmower engine serves a two-fold purpose: it keeps the engine in balance during operation and also creates an inductive current for ignition with its implanted magnets. The ignition coil and other ignition parts are located beneath the flywheel. You must remove the flywheel to access these parts and also when dismantling the engine for general overhaul purposes. Once you strip the engine down to the flywheel, you can remove it with the proper tools and basic mechanical know-how.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench set
  • Penetrating oil
  • Rawhide hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the retaining nut from the center shaft of the flywheel using the appropriate size socket wrench. Turn the nut counterclockwise while gripping the flywheel.

    • 2

Apply a small amount of penetrating oil where the base of the flywheel meets the center shaft. Notice the keyway slot and focus your oil here as well.

    • 3

Tap the sides of the flywheel lightly with a rawhide hammer to set up a vibration. This helps to expedite the penetration of the oil.

    • 4

Line up the two bolts on either side of the flywheel puller with the two female threaded holes on the flywheel. Screw the bolts into the holes clockwise by hand.

    • 5

Line up the center bolt with the center of the shaft and tighten it snugly by hand.

    • 6

Tighten the two side bolts with an adjustable wrench.

    • 7

Turn the center bolt one-quarter-turn clockwise with the adjustable wrench. Tap the outer perimeter of the flywheel with the rawhide hammer.

    • 8

Repeat Step 7 until the flywheel is loosened from the center shaft.

    • 9

Remove the flywheel straight off from the shaft.
