Check the oil drain plug. Tighten with wrench, if necessary. Inspect the rings for damage and replace. Examine the gasket and lower seal for cracks. Replace if damaged.
Inspect the oil dip stick. Tighten the dipstick if it has been jarred loose. Replace the O-ring gasket and tube on the dipstick if damaged.
Check the head gasket to see if it is blown. Confirm the sump bolt is on tight. Check the sump for any cracks and replace if damaged.
Check the side-mounted, oil-breather gasket. Inspect engine oil level to determine if the engine has been over-filled. Drain excess oil and replace with fresh oil to the correct level.
Determine if the oil is leaking from more than one location, an indication of crankcase pressure problems. Have a repair technician apply a manometer test to confirm. Enlist a certified Craftsman technician to repair the lawn tractor if the crankcase has been damaged.
