How to Remove the Steering Wheel of an International Cub Cadet 1250

The Cub Cadet 1250 was produced from 1974 to 1980 by International Harvester, and was part of the Cub Cadet "Quietline" series of lawn tractors. The 1250 was equipped with a 12-horsepower Kohler one-cylinder gasoline engine. The Cub Cadet 1250 was available with a 38-inch mowing deck, and the options on the 1250 included a 44-inch or a 50-inch mowing deck. All three mowing decks were available with either manual or hydraulic lift capabilities. The steering wheel on the 1250 will come apart into four different pieces, and is relatively easy to remove.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the center cap from the outboard side of the steering wheel, using a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 2

Hold the steering wheel motionless with one hand while you remove the 5/8-inch jam nut from the center of the steering wheel. Use a ratchet and socket to remove the nut.

    • 3

Pull the steering wheel upward and off the steering shaft, using the flat-head screwdriver to help pry it off, if needed.

    • 4

Check the front wheels to make sure they are aimed straight forward. Install the steering wheel onto the steering shaft so that it is aimed straight forward. Install and tighten a new jam nut until snug onto the steering wheel. Turn the ratchet 1/2-turn farther, so as not to apply too much torque to the center of the wheel.

    • 5

Install the center cap onto the steering wheel, by hand.
