How to Get Pulleys Off a Mower

If you hear excessive squealing when you engage the mower deck on your lawn mower, you likely have a worn-out bearing. The bearings are pressed onto the spindle shafts that extend through the top of the mower deck. They allow the pulleys to spin freely around the spindles. If you need to replace worn bearings, you must pull the pulley off the spindle with a spindle puller. Before you can remove the pulley, you must remove the mower deck. Refer to the owner's manual for the correct process of removing the deck since this process will differ on just about every model.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the belt covers mounted over the pulleys on the mower deck. In most cases, you can remove the fasteners that secure the covers to the deck with a screwdriver or wrench. Place the covers off to the side.

    • 2

Inspect the top of the pulley. If you see a bolt going through the center of the pulley, remove it. Otherwise, skip this step.

    • 3

Place the lip located at the end of each of the three jaws on the spindle puller behind the pulley. At the same time, place the threaded shaft of the spindle puller directly in the center of the pulley.

    • 4

Place a wrench onto the square end of the threaded shaft and turn the shaft clockwise. The jaws will move up the shaft and pull the pulley off the spindle shaft.
