How to Change a Throttle Spring on a Briggs & Stratton Riding Mower

A wide variety of riding mowers and lawn tractors use Briggs & Stratton engines as their power source. Briggs & Stratton engines use a carburetor to control the mixture of gasoline and air delivered to the combustion chamber. A throttle control allows the user to open and close the carburetor throttle, causing the engine to run at different speeds. A spring keeps tension on the carburetor throttle, preventing the engine speed from changing due to vibrations or bumps. If the throttle cable breaks, the spring closes the carburetor, slowing the engine to its lowest speed for safety. If the spring is worn or broken, the engine will not operate correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood of the riding mower and disconnect the black rubber boot connected to the spark plug. Secure the boot away from the spark plug to prevent accidental contact. Place the throttle in the lowest position.

    • 2

Remove the air filter cover and the filter according to the maintenance instructions that came with the riding mower. Remove the bolts or screws holding the lower air filter assembly to the carburetor to expose the carburetor.

    • 3

Locate the large spring connected to the throttle-shaft lever on top rear of the carburetor. Grip the hooked end of the spring with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Twist the end of the spring up and out of the hole in the throttle-shaft lever.

    • 4

Twist the spring in toward the engine block and remove the other end from the hole in the throttle linkage. Discard the used spring.

    • 5

Hook the end of a new spring in the hole in the throttle linkage. Make sure the short end of the spring connects to the throttle linkage.

    • 6

Grip the end of the spring with needle-nose pliers. Twist the end of the spring up and seat the end of the hook into the hole in the throttle-shaft lever.

    • 7

Place the air filter assembly on the carburetor, install the screws or bolts and tighten them. Place the air filter into the assembly and install the cover. Connect the spark plug and close the hood.
