How to Rebuild a Lawn-Boy Carburetor

Lawn Boy push lawn mowers are powered by small gas engines that use carburetors to distribute fuel and keep the mower running. Over time, especially after the Lawn Boy sits up during the off season, residue and impurities can build up inside the carburetor and can clog its ports. Signs that your carburetor may need to be removed, disassembled, cleaned and rebuilt include sputtering and sluggishness when adjusting the throttle to high.

Use a screwdriver to remove the plastic engine cover.

    • 3

Loosen the wing nut on top of the air filter by hand, then remove the air filter.

    • 4

Remove the throttle and choke linkage from the carburetor control arms with a pair of pliers. Also use the pliers to remove all the fuel lines from the carburetor.

    • 5

Remove the two nuts that run through the carburetor body, then remove the carburetor from the mower.

    • 6

Use a wrench to remove the fuel deliver compartment, then pull out the metering rod. Clean the metering rod with carburetor cleaner or discard it and replace it with a new one if it is too corroded.

    • 7

Spray all the carburetor ports and jets thoroughly with spray carburetor cleaner. Also spray the throttle control arm, working it back and forth by hand as you clean it.

    • 8

Use the wrench to remove the float valve. Clean it with carburetor cleaner and an old toothbrush if it is not too corroded. If it is too corroded replace the float valve with a new one.

    • 9

Set the carburetor back in place on the mower once all the parts are clean and dry, then replace the two fastening nuts with the nut driver.

    • 10

Reattach the throttle and shift linkage to the carburetor. Reinstall all the fuel lines using the pliers if need be to slide the lines back into place.

    • 11

Set the air filter cover back in place. If the air filter is dirty, replace it with a clean one. Set the air filter cover back on and screw the wing nut back on.

    • 12

Replace the spark plug wire and reattach the plastic engine cover.
