How to Take a Knuckle Off of a Prairie 650

Taking the steering knuckle off the Prairie 650 ATV is necessary in order to replace the part. The original steering knuckles are part of a recall and can be removed with some basic automotive tools in about an hour or two. The steering knuckle fastens the outer tie rod and ball joint to the wheel spindle in order to turn the wheel of the ATV.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the Prairie 650 ATV on a flat, level surface and set the transmission in "Park." Place wood blocks behind the rear wheels and loosen the lug nuts on the front wheel with a tire tool.

    • 2

Lift the front end of the ATV with a floor jack and place a jack stand under the vehicle. Do not place the jack stand underneath the steering knuckle that is to be removed.

    • 3

Lower the vehicle onto the jack stand and remove the front wheel from the vehicle. Unfasten the bolts holding the brake caliper on the rotor with a socket wrench and suspend the brake caliper from the vehicle frame with a wire hanger.

    • 4

Slide the rotor off the spindle and disconnect the cotter pin from the retaining nut on the ball joint with a pair of pliers. Unfasten the retaining nut with the socket wrench and pry the ball joint away from the steering knuckle with a small pry bar.

    • 5

Disconnect the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle with small pry bar and remove the steering knuckle from the Prairie 650 ATV.
