Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the John Deere 214 mower. Open the front engine hood to reveal the battery.

    • 2

Use a dry cloth to clean the exterior of the battery and soak up any oil and dirt.

    • 3

Use a socket wrench to disconnect the black negative and red positive wire leads from each side of the battery. Disconnect the negative and then the positive wire. Do not allow either wire lead to remain in contact with the battery.

    • 4

Clean up any corrosion on the battery using a wire brush. Wipe the battery with your dry cloth after using the brush.

    • 5

Unscrew the vent caps on the battery unless you are working with a sealed battery model. Take out any dirt and debris that gathered around the vent caps. Use a flashlight to check inside the caps and see if you can notice the metal plates inside.

    • 6

Add battery water until the metal plates are covered and obscured from your view. Set the vent caps back into place on the battery.

    • 7

Hook the battery up to a battery charger and leave it overnight or during the daylight hours to gradually charge up. Turn off the battery charger and then leave the battery idle for at least 12 hours before proceeding.

    • 8

Hook the battery's red and black terminal wires back up and close your John Deere 214 mower's engine hood. If the battery still will not work, take it to a battery specialist for consultation.
